How to Make Friends and Keep Them

Cheesy, we know. Friendships can either be effortless, or a losing battle. What we know is that we all want and need them in order to be happy. Whether you’re on the look out to expand your friendship group, have just moved away from home, or simply just need a shoulder to cry on, here are our tips for friendships that last.

Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there

Sometimes all it takes is to join a new sports team, or attend social events in your area to meet new people. Even popular dating apps such as Bumble have a feature that helps you connect with people looking for BFF’s! Chances are you’ll meet like-minded people if you pursue activities that are important to you.

Choose the right people

If someone’s favourite hobby is complaining, or talking behind people’s backs, there’s a good chance they’re doing it about you too. Authentic friendships are built on the basis of trust, not insecurity. Good friends want what’s best for you, and won’t try to use you to further their own agendas.

Act selflessly

You can’t expect anyone to be there for you if you’re not going to be there for them. Small gestures like lending an ear in a tough time, or doing a favour for someone will be returned with gratitude. To an extent, friendships are about give and take, but avoid keeping tabs on this. Be generous expecting nothing in return.

Maintain, maintain, maintain

Chances are, an old friend from high school would be happy to just hear from you, let alone to grab coffee or a drink. Friendships can be hard work, but it’s important to make time for people even when your life gets busy. Don’t let relationships or work get in the way of seeing people who have prioritised you in the past.

Hopefully, most of you reading this will already be doing most of these things. A good friend can make your day better, make your weekends crazier, and support you through the not-so-fun times. Reach out. Sometimes a simple “hello” is all it takes.
