Going green does not involve you making huge changes in your life and routine, like some may think. In fact, it’s mostly the thought that counts, because once prepared and determined, you can easily make these small and tiny changes in your life for the sustainability of the earth. Going green is for not anyone else, but only for yourself and your future generations. It’s basically a promise of a better and cleaner planet for your offspring’s and theirs, and many more after that. Here are some tips that you can follow and make your home a better and cleaner place to live – quite conveniently though, and simply, Go Green!
This generation specifically, can save a lot of energy just turning their computers off instead of putting them on sleep mode through the night. This way you can save up to 40 watt-hours per day. And if you’re not that of a patient person and don’t want to wait till the computer turns on then just put it to boot up a few minutes before you’re going to sit to work. Since our generation uses quite the amount of electronic gadgets, we may be able to save a whole lot of energy.
When using a printer or a photocopy machine, set them to print on both sides of the paper, this will save heaps and heaps paper. American businesses throw away 21 million tons of paper annually. This makes approximately about 175 pounds per worker. So just imagine how much paper could be saved. Also, when you’re done with the documents, don’t forget to recycle.
Also, try to recycle glass. This reduces related air pollution by 20 percent and water pollution by 50 percent. On the other hand, if not recycled, glass can take about a million years to decompose.
Instead of fancy electronics, hang dry your laundry. Use a clothesline or rack to dry the clothes in the air. Even your clothes will last longer this way.
This one you’ve been hearing since you were a child – While brushing your teeth, don’t leave the tap running. If you do this, you will be conserving about 5 gallons of water per day.
Avoid bottled water. This is not only good for your health, but also the environment and on, not to mention, your wallet. Almost 90% of plastic bottles are not recycled, that means that the previous are just left to rot and decompose; which will take thousands of years. The EPA’s standards for tap water are way better that the FDA’s standards for bottled water.
Other than this, consider buying local or organic. Imagine all the distance your food has traveled to be here on your plate, it’s not only a little unhygienic but also causes pollution. This will support the economy of your own country and the amount of greenhouse gases are also reduced; that are created when your products are flown or trucked again.
One of the most important things that we surely need to shun, are plastic bags. About 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide. Being non-biodegradable, they do not decompose, instead end up in the oceans and thus eventually the food chain.
So these are some of the many steps that you should follow at your home in order to go green. Everything starts from your own home By making only a few adjustments in your life, you can also live sustainably.
